Microblading 101: Part One
Alright you guys I have a feeling today's post is going to be a good one especially because I've already had SO many questions about my eyebrows since getting them done at Bella Casa Day Spa a few weeks ago. I briefly touched on my microblading in this post but today, I'm giving you the full 411. So, let's just get right into it, shall we?
What is microblading?
Microblading is a semi permanent beauty treatment where natural hair like strokes are individually created so that a natural looking brow is achieved. Unlike tattooing which can sometimes appear fake looking, microblading is done using a "pen" with a blade at the end that is dipped in ink. The technician draws hair like strokes one by one so that the end result is incredibly natural looking and lasts about 12-18 months.
So walk me through the appointment, what happens?
When you first arrive numbing cream is applied to your brows. Since it needs to sit for 20-30 mins to be fully effective this is done first thing and then you sit down to go through some paperwork. Jen goes through your medical history, she walks you through the treatment, talks to you about microblading and answers any questions you might have. She's incredibly thorough and addresses any concerns you might have right off the bat.
After your consult, the actual treatment begins! The numbing cream is wiped away and Jen goes about taking detailed measurements of your face and shape and starts to create the brow shape, making marks on your face with a pencil and drawing out your 'new brows'. This is the part that's crucial and it's important to find someone like Jen who will take their time and be meticulous. After all, this is your face we're talking about here! haha
After Jen outlines your 'new brows' she sits you up and asks you to take a look and make sure you're happy. If you are and all looks good then the microblading begins.
Does it hurt?
Yes, but not as much as you probably think it will. I had spoken to a few different people who'd had it done and their experiences varied in terms of how much they thought it hurt. For me, I was pleasantly surprised as I thought it was going to be brutally painful. It feels like you're being scratched and thanks to the strong numbing cream Jen uses, the pain is very manageable. With Jen at Bella Casa Day Spa, the does the initial outline and then adds another layer of numbing cream. After that second layer, when she does her second round of blading, you literally cannot feel a thing- scout's honor.
The weirdest part of the treatment isn't actually the feeling but rather the sound. As she blades, you hear a sound similar to velcro or like a light etching into a stone. It's kind of bizarre yet totally cool at the same time and as Jen told me, you want to hear that sound because that means the technique is being done properly. Who knew?! lol
So then what?
Once Jen is done, she gets you to sit up again and take a look at your brows. If there is anything you want fixed or changed or added, she does so at this time (for me, there was nothing, I was so happy!), and then she applies more ink to soak into the incisions while she goes through the post treatment care instructions.
Post Treatment
Jen sends you home with detailed post care instructions to ensure the treatment is as successful as possible. You're given a balm to apply morning and evening as your brows heal but possibly the most important post care to remember is not to touch your brows or get them wet for 2 weeks. I know this sounds hard and trust me, it is - but if you get your brows wet, water might get into the incision and cause either an infection or, open up the incision and the ink might leave the incision, meaning you'll need the full treatment all over again.
How did they feel?
The first day I had them done they were a little tender after the treatment. I took two tylenol before my treatment and took two later that night but the pain wasn't bad. The next day they felt amazing! It wasn't until day 4 that they started to get a little itchy as they healed. It was tough not to scratch them but I just kept thinking of my soon to be perfect brows as motivation not to mess with them.
At this point, my brows have been done for 2 weeks and I am pretty much obsessed. In about 4-6 weeks I'll be seeing Jen again for my touch up appointment. Typically only one touchup is needed however Jen does offer a third treatment if required. I'll be sure to share my full experience after my touch up so stay tuned for that!
